How To Set Goals and Targets For Yourself?

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible” – Tony Robbins

I am sure that most of you are aware of goal setting and you also know the benefits and importance of goal setting. However, let me ask you one question: Give me a list of 3 goals that you have set, achieved and those goals that made a significant change in your life?

It is obvious that you will always be excited to talk about your results which you generated. But at the same time, some of you are struggling to write down and make a list.

This blog will not only help you to set goals but also guide you on how to achieve them. So next time, if you are asked the same question as above, you will be able to mention the 3 goals which made a significant change in your life.

Research on Goal Setting:

The Harvard MBA Study on Goal Setting

In the Harvard Business School MBA study on goal setting, the graduating class was asked a single question about their goals in life. The question went like this :

Have you set written goals and created a plan for their attainment?

Prior to graduation, it was determined that:

  • 84% of the entire class had set no goals at all
  • 13% of the class had set written goals but had no concrete plans
  • 3% of the class had both written goals and concrete plans

The results? – Well, you’ve likely somewhat guessed it. 10 years later, the 13% of the class that had set written goals but had not created plans, were making twice as much money as the 84% of the class that had set no goals at all.

However, the apparent kicker is that the 3% of the class that had both written goals and a plan were making ten times as much as the rest of the 97% of the class.

Q. What is the outcome of this activity?

The outcome of the activity is those who have more 10’s, have the ability to have a long-term vision which gives them long-term results.

How to set goals and achieve them?

Hare, I am giving you 5 simple steps which will direct you to achieve any goal of your life. You can take a printout of the above questionnaire and goal-setting worksheet to note down any relevant points that you may have.

Step 1   – Write 3 goals that you want to achieve in the next 1 year.

Step 2  –  Below every goal please write the relevance of this goal in your life and how the life will look like after achieving the goal.

Step 3  – Write down the steps/ technology/methods which you are going to use to achieve this goal.

Step 4  – Importance of evaluating your progress.

I believe that most people don’t achieve goals on time because they don’t evaluate their progress after certain intervals. Please check the below example and tell me whether you agree or not.

For example, when a plane takes off from Pune, traveling to the USA, it evaluates its progress along the way. It knows, at any given moment of its journey, just how far it’s come, where it is and the distance that is left to go. It knows the direction to travel in, the wind speed, the plane’s speed, potential disruptions with air-traffic congestion or storms, and much more.

Following are the questions which will help you to put an evaluation system for your goals.

  1. What will be the frequency of your evaluation?
  2. How are you going to monitor the progress? Write steps.
  3. If you fail to achieve your goal, how are you going to recover till the next evaluation?

Step 5 – Reward yourself

When you complete your goal it is important to reward yourself for this achievement. Look back over your accomplishments and enjoy the satisfaction that success brings. This will train the subconscious mind to focus on activities that produce successful results.

I wish you all the best for your career, health, wealth, relationship goals and for a prosperous life.
